Honey Roast Chicken Pringles

Yet another in the long line of new Pringles flavors is “Honey Roast Chicken”. Chicken flavored things seem to be common at this time of year. I guess it has something to do with the KFC and Christmas thing I spoke about before.

Since Mr. Pringles is winking at us and holding a present, I would assume that this is Pringles’ Christmas gift to us. They weren’t bad at all, as usual.

Some Christmas Spirit

Christmas has been creeping up so quickly that I’ve barely even noticed it was almost here. To remedy this and add some Christmas spirit to the house I went out and purchased a small 120cm Christmas tree.

I was very surprised when I got home and opened the box. Inside was all of the ornament. I had no idea when I bought it. It’s lucky that the store I bought it at had no good ornament, or else I would have wasted my money. Here’s a picture of it fully decorated.

Not bad. I’m still looking for a star for the top. According to my wife it’s not very common over here. Neither are angels, so I wonder what do they put at the top?

Gorgonzola

In Canada we have all kinds of  Ritz crackers with stuff in between them, cheese, peanut butter, etc. We don’t however have Ritz with gorgonzola in it. They are quite tasty indeed.

It’s interesting that most of the cheese you can get at grocery stores is terrible in Japan. The quality being very processed and mostly bland tasting. Sure you can get better stuff at specialty stores that have foreign cheese, but for the most part it’s a dire situation. However you can get a complex tasting Italian “blue” cheese in between Ritz crackers. It’s quite the opposite from Canada.

Expensive Pudding

pudding-1

My Father-in-law brought home this expensive pudding. It’s made in Zao, which is close to Zao mountain. It’s seems that Zao has a reputation for making high quality food. I had heard before that sausages from Zao Are also quite good. Pudding in Japan is a bit more firm and almost gelatinous, not like the more creamy pudding in Canada. It’s also almost always vanilla flavored, with some caramel syrup on the bottom, like in the picture below.

The only thing was, even though it was expensive, I couldn’t really taste a difference between it and the cheap stuff.

Chicken Doritos

I got this at the local grocery store. Fried chicken flavored Doritos. My addiction to try all new flavors of chips can’t be stopped. I simply must try everything at least once. The thing is Japan has a ton of limited time flavors. I’m constantly find new ones.

Famicom Disk System

disk_system

This is a Famicom (NES) with a “Disk System” attached to it. The Disk System was an add on for the Famicom that could use re-writable disk like the one pictured below.

famicom_zelda_disk

This was a big innovation, because you could fit more data, save the progress of games, and it was cheaper to produce. Lots of games that came on cartridges in North America were actually originally Disk System games, like Metroid and Zelda. To help people understand it easier, Nintendo made a comic book to explain it. I found this on the internet recently.

It’s all about three kids and their adventures learning about Disk System. Here a page of the actual comic translated in English.

If you want to read the whole thing go to NFG Games. They’ve translated the whole thing for your viewing pleasure.

Nice Weather

One of the reasons why I moved to Japan was to avoid some of the nasty winter weather back in Ottawa. So far it has totally paid off. In Ottawa today it’s snowing and it’s -8 degrees. I got this picture from the web-cam at the Lord Elgin hotel showing the state of Confederation park.

Aside from the christmas lights, it looks quite dreadful. In Sendai however it’s sunny and the temperature is 18 degrees. Here a photo of the graden I took today.

Some of the trees have lost their leaves, but every thing is still looking good. Hell, we even have lots of flowers that are still blooming.

weather2

Maybe someone didn’t tell them it was December 10th. We’re supposed to be in the cold part of Japan, but so far it’s only snowed once at night and it all melted by the time I woke up. Very nice! Oh and knock on wood, so I don’t jinx it.

KFC Christmas

As I mentioned before, KFC somehow managed to get a stranglehold on Christmas over here. Most people only have toaster ovens or microwave/halogen ovens so cooking a huge turkey is pretty much impossible. Some smart person at KFC said “Hey, let’s sell them lots of chicken. It’s just like turkey anyways”. So to find out more about it I picked up the”Kentucky Christmas News”.

kfc-christ-1

They have lots of different choices of combinations.

kfc-christ-2

Various buckets of chicken, salads and cakes, including KFC champagne or roast chicken too. Even boxes stuffed to the brimming with various types of fried chicken, boneless or not.

kfc-christ-3

The most interesting was however is the expensively price “Premium Roast Chicken”

kfc-christ-4

It seems to come with a cloth bag and some kind of sauce. If a whole chicken is too expensive at 5600 yen, you can buy just one piece at only 1000 yen. Super expensive!

New Blu

Recently I went on a bit of a Blu-ray buying spree. Mostly because I had a lot of points at Yodobashi and Yamada Denki. After using the points it was super cheap, so I couldn’t resist. The first was the new Indiana Jones movie.

indy1

Many people didn’t like the movie, but I loved it. I think it fit right in with the other movies in the series. I also got Batman Begins. I know this one is not so new, but it is kind of new on Blu-ray.

batman

Batman Begins is so good. I looks unbelievable in HD. After watching it I felt like I had never really seen it the proper way. Finally I picked up a copy of Jumper.

jumper

I really liked this movie. It was super fun, and it had every kid’s dream super power in it, teleportation. Watching some of the special features, I found out the double decker bus that gets thrown in the desert was really done and not CG. I guess I assume that most stuff nowadays is CG. It’s good to see people still do it the old fashioned way. Another interesting thing is that because I had English menus selected, I couldn’t even select any Japanese language options on Batman and Jumper. I had to change my preference to Japanese menus to see them. It made me think that maybe the Japanese and the American version are exactly the same. Maybe if you choose Japanese menus on the American version you can get Japanese audio and subtitles. I’m curious now.
