Dragon Quest Merch

What’s this a real post!! I bet everybody thought I forgot about this poor blog (I did a little bit). Truth is it’s all due to laziness (and not having much to write about)! So out of building feelings of guiltiness and neglect, comes a post.

Anyways here’s some of the various Dragon Quest merchandise I bought over the past while. Most of it was for the 25th anniversary. Some of it I actually got at the DQ museum that was in Tokyo last year. First is a special slime for the 25th anniversary.

What’s different about it? Well it’s wearing a bow-tie first of all. Also on the back it has a special patch.

I also picked up this cool slime glass.

I use it everyday to drink juice in the morning. There’s a couple more slimes on the back too.

These special booklets were only for people who went to the 25th anniversary museum.

Inside is some simple quests for you to do while you looked at the exhibit. If you did everything correctly you got a special pin as shown below.

Here’s a slime handkerchief I got. I thought it was really cute.

One thing I tend to do when I go somewhere in Japan is buy a special handkerchief for that place. They always sell them everywhere, and they’re also really handy and useful. A souvenir that you can actually put to use.

I got this book at the local Yodobashi Camera electronics store.

It’s almost what you would call a Dragon Quest history book. It’s filled with tons of info about the series.

I just wish it was in English…

All the artwork is cool though.

Here’s some playing cards.

They have a really cool slime design on the back of them.

Also some the cards have some cool pictures on them.

Finally here’s an Eco-bag. It looks like a Famicom (NES) box when it’s all folded up.

When it’s open you can see the hero symbol on the front of the bag.

So that’s my round of all my goodies. Lately I’ve been acquiring some good Jojo stuff due to its anniversary this year so expect a future post on that.

Dragon Quest Museum

Here’s my photos from when I went to the Dragon Quest museum. This museum is being held for a limited time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the series. Unfortunately they only allowed taking photos of these statues of some of the characters. I wish I could show you some photos of the other stuff I saw. Some of it was amazing. Like seeing the original art done by Akira Toriyama (the Dragonball guy) for the game. It was all the real deal, not some copies or prints. I’d have to say his artwork looks even better then when you see it printed. It was the highlight for me. Anyways have a look at the statues below. Keep in mind that these were all life size, so they were quite large.

Above is a picture of a Slime meat bun. Right now Family Mart is selling them for a limited time because of the DQ 25th anniversary. One of my students gave it to me. I guess he knew I liked Slimes. I felt a little guilty eating it since the Slime was smiling at me, but I did it anyways. It tasted like a normal Chinese meat bun. Right after eating it though I did level up to level two!!

Busy Busy

Now you might be wondering why there haven’t been any posts in almost a month. ‘What the hell happened to him?’ you’re thinking. Well the lack of any work on my blog can be answered with two reasons. No, it’s not because work is so busy, or some sort of crisis. The simple answer is “Rock Band 3” and “Gran Turismo 5”! At the beginning of the month Rock Band 3 came out, and thus began my total obsession with playing it every waking moment.

I had previously written about my love of the older incarnations of Rock Band, so this was no surprise at all. The addition of a new instrument to play didn’t help either.

Yes, they added keyboards! Opening the world of Rock Band to various piano, synth, or organ based music. Hell I can play songs by New Order and other great 80’s bands now. Considering New Order is one of my favourite bands, that’s pretty awesome.

Later this month I was starting to cool down on Rock Band, but what decided to rear its head after almost six years of development? Gran Turismo 5!

My favourite race game of all time. Needless to say this month was properly gone to games. I’m still quite rabidly addicted to GT5, and even considering getting a racing wheel for my PS3. This can’t turn out well….

Happy 25th

Today 25 years ago on September 13th 1985, Super Mario Bros. was released in Japan. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long. Cheers Mario!  Happy Birthday! To celebrate Nintendo is releasing a sweet Mario collection in Japan. The box is really nice.

Check out the video below to see the history of the Super Mario series.

Dragon Quest IX

This past weekend Dragon Quest IX was finally released in English, almost a year after the Japanese version. Any long time readers of my blog will know that I’m crazy about Dragon Quest. I managed to acquire a copy, and I have to say it’s quite fantastic. So far I’ve sunk almost 14 hours into it! The story is quite good, and I really like that the appearance of your characters change when you change equipment. You can make them look really cool and cute! The only bad part is since it came out so long ago in Japan, I can’t seem to be able to use the WiFi tag mode where you can meet other players when you’re walking around town, because no one here is still playing it! I tried it on Monday walking around Sendai in some of the busiest sections of town, but came up with zilch. Oh well. The trailer is below. The theme music is so good, it always gets me excited!

Nintendo announced today at E3 a new DS, called the 3DS, because it’ll be in 3D! The best part is you won’t have to wear any stupid glasses to have the 3D work. It looks really good. I can’t wait to get one.  I like that the top screen is not wide-screen. Oh I want this badly!!
