Yes, I had the McRib at McDonald’s. Japan is lucky and gets some McRIb action just like North America. The one difference however is the flavour is very different from the one in Canada. It’s still really delicious though. I really like the nice autumnal display. Now when I think of red leaves the McRib will pop into mind. On a side note, I only noticed this while I was doing this post but above the display is an ad for “Bacon Potato Pie”. Sounds interesting! I’ll have toi have a taste test.
Mochi Festival
In Kakuda on Sunday they had a small mochi festival at the train station. Mochi is a very sticky rice sweet. They pound the rice with a big hammer until it’s a stretchy blob. I’m not a fan of mochi, but Japanese people sure are.
The line up for this stuff was incredibly long. I guess the only thing Japanese people like better than mochi….is free mochi! They also has a small flea market too. It’s the busiest I’ve ever seen Kakuda station.
Karamucho
This is my favorite Japanese snack. It’s completely different from any Canadian potato. The flavour is spicy, kind of a mix of chili and garlic. I especially like the potato stick version. It’s much spicier than the normal potato chip one. They have some different variations, but this one is the best. Also there is the sister snack Supamucho, but that’s essentially just salt and vingar. You can find the potato chip version in Canada sometimes, but never the stick version, which is a travesty!
Hmm Vicks
Yes we have Vicks cough drops in Canada too, but I was surprised when I bought these ones. I was hoping by the color of the box it would be grapefruit or something citrus.
Much to my dismay, upon close inspection It was plum. I should have read the katakana better. Unfortunately I had already paid for them. The flavour is not bad, but by far not what I want from a cough drop.
Interesting Chips
I got this at Trial super store in Natori. Mayo flavored chips!
You can see the mayo bottles all over the bag. I’ve personally never had mayo flavored chips so I had to buy it and try it out. You can see in the close up on the bag the chips actually have little stripes of mayo.
Kind of interesting. I can’t wait to try them!
Mecha Mecha Iketeru!
One of my favourite shows in Japan is Mecha Mecha Iketeru. It’s a really funny show where they do all kinds of comedy segments. It features the comedy duo “Ninety Nine” and a cast of regulars, including Arino from Game Center CX. I found some video so you can get a taste of the show and it’s hilarity. Enjoy!
A boiling hot water trap.
Break dancing battle.
A clip of them being mean to pop idols. Watch around the five minute mark especially.
Okamura versus a really big pro sumo wrestler.

New DS!?!?
Well Nintendo announced the new DS revision today in Japan. It’s called the DSi.
It’s a bit lighter and thinner than the DS Lite, has bigger screens, two built in cameras, improved speakers, a SD card slot, MP3 playing abilities, and a built in web browser. You can see a size comparison below.
You can see in the pictures that a few things are different, like the power button, and the shoulder buttons. Also the the new one is not shiny. Both colors are matte finish (which should help with fingerprints). All this is coming soon on November 1st for 18,900 yen. The only question is, to buy or not to buy? The website showing the details (all in Japanese of course) is here Nintendo DSi.
80’s TV Games
I got this book the other day. It’s all about 1980’s TV games. TV games is what Japanese people say instead of video games. The book has lots of pictures.
It goes through every year of the 80’s and shows the gaming highlights for that year. It covers Famicom (NES), Super Famicom (SNES), PC Engine (Turbografx), and Mega Drive (Genesis). You can’t believe how popular the Turbografx was over here. It was more popular than the Genesis. Used Turbografx systems run around 5000 yen ($50) for one that is in bad shape. The only thing I wish about this book is…that it was in English. Why can’t we have cool books like this in English.
Little Message
I got the Ghana cookies a while ago. They’re all chocolaty and delicious.
Each one comes individually wrapped.
This is normal in Japan. They love extra packaging over here. The other day I noticed something interesting on the back of the little packages.
Ghana chocolate gives you a nice sentiment on each cookie in questionable English. How nice!
New Flavors
As I’ve shown before Pringles comes out with a lot of new flavors in Japan. At least a few a month. Well I got two new ones for the books. The first is Onion Gratin.
It’s kind of a French onion soup flavor. The second is Bacon Sour Cream.
It’s kind of like a baked potato with the toppings. Both were pretty good. Every time I see a new flavor I can’t resist trying it. It’s kind of an addiction I guess.
